What is Dermapen microneedling?

Dermapen microneedling treatments work by delivering tiny, microscopic punctures to the skin using a pen-shaped tool with very tiny and fast-moving needles in a stamping motion. The needles only penetrate the skin a few millimeters deep, creating millions of fine microchannels (invisible to the naked eye). During this process, active medical-grade skin products containing vitamins and other beneficial ingredients are applied to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin (these channels carry up to 80% more topical nutrients), while at the same time our body’s healing response triggers a natural process of repair. This results in the production of new collagen and elastin, and a completely rejuvenated, more youthful complexion. The treatment can be done anywhere on the body, from hard to reach areas such as around the eyes, eyelids, earlobes, neck, lips, nose or larger areas of neck and décolleté, stomach and legs for stretch mark treatments.

Is the treatment painful, and how long is recovery time?

While some areas can be a little sensitive, the Dermapen4  is the most comfortable and virtually pain-free micro-needling treatment available, thanks to advanced technology and design. There is no need for any topical anesthetic cream, just lay back and enjoy the stunning results.

Right after a treatment your skin may be a little pink and sensitive, however this is easily concealed with a cooling, calming protective lotion (Dermapen’s CoverRecover) to reduce and camouflage redness, along with SPF30 protection, so you are able to go straight back to work. Your skin will recover over the next 12 to 24 hours, so it’s important you don’t wear any makeup during this time and avoid sun exposure so that your skin can heal. Because of this, it’s best you don’t do a treatment the day or two leading up to an event.

How should I prepare my skin for a Dermapen treatment?

Firstly, it’s best you don’t have excessive sun exposure for a couple of weeks before (or after) your treatment, and it’s important you haven’t used any self-tanner (fake tan) for a week prior to your treatment. This is because the skin must be completely clean.

If you’re looking for optimal results, a home care regime of Dp Dermaceuticals (clean skincare line created by Dermapen specifically for use with microneedling) will encourage the skin to prepare, strengthen and fortify, especially for thin or delicate skin areas, with active ingredients such as Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and other important skin nutrients and ingredients. You would then continue to use Dp Dermaceuticals for a period of 2-3 weeks both before and after the Dermapen treatments for best outcomes.

How many treatments are recommended for anti-ageing skin rejuvenation, acne scarring, pigmentation and stretch marks?

Usually the below treatment intervals will be most effective, depending on your skin concerns and what you’re looking to achieve:

  • Rejuvenation: 3-6 treatments 6-8 weeks apart

  • Acne scarring: 4-6 treatments 6-8 weeks apart

  • Stretch marks: 4-8 treatments 6-8 weeks apart

  • Pigmentation: 4-6 treatments 2-4 weeks apart

  • Superficial treatments maybe recommended at 4 weekly intervals

How soon after filler/muscle relaxant injections can I have a Dermapen treatment?

While there is no clinical evidence that Dermapen treatments counteract with any particular injectables, it is important to let your clinician know if you have had an injectable treatment, or are planning one in the near future. We will be able to advise you on when to schedule your treatment appropriately.

How long should it take before I see results?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment with a plumper and more glowing complexion, however lasting and more significant results will become visible after four to six months when your skin has rejuvenated by generating new collagen and elastin. The condition of your skin will then continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of multiple treatments, especially when combined with the recommended post-treatment care.
